For your lifestyle makeover to be complete, changes in behavior must occur. These behavior changes are commonly referred to as lifestyle changes. A state of wellness can only be achieved if you have made the lifestyle changes necessary to support and nurture this new way of life. You may need further, more in-depth counseling than what I am able to provide. Seeing a licensed counselor, or a Registered Dietitian (RD) who specializes in disordered eating, may be a good idea if you have indeed felt out of control with your eating/eating habits or have self esteem issues that do not allow you to truly love yourself and deem yourself worthy of a life of wellness. Counselors/therapists are wonderful. They can be very helpful in determining your emotional readiness for lifestyle changes and can provide ongoing support. There are also many different groups out there which can provide you support, some are online so that anonymity is maintained, if desired.
Preparing your environment is very important in making the switch over to healthier eating. As mentioned above, it involves tasks such as taking inventory of pantry and refrigerator items; cleaning out the pantry and fridge and ridding them of trigger items. What are trigger items? These are foods that cause (trigger) you to binge or overeat. If there are any foods like that where you can’t seem to stop yourself from eating the whole container or bag, get rid of them. If unopened, donate them to the needy or at the very least have a support person in place and give the trigger items to him/her regardless of being opened or not.
Bottom line is you need to love yourself in order to open yourself up to accepting and making the lifestyle changes necessary in achieving overall wellness.
